"Slightly more formal co-working centers have opened across the country, including Affinity Lab in office space above the Diner in Adams Morgan. Ads on the wall at Tryst offer space to the fully-evolved nomad who doesn't want a formal office but still wants a community of people to swap ideas with -- and a fax machine."

Affinity Lab Wins $100,000 Business Plan Competition

Adams Morgan based Affinity Lab, a business cowork venture, took first place in a business plan competition qualifying for $100,000 in investment in a tight four-way competition staged at the Washington, DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP).

“We saw four great presentations from the finalists,” says Steve Moore, President and CEO of the WDCEP. “These business concepts were very exciting but Affinity Lab stood out as the new new thing. They capture what is happening now in the incubation of small businesses. Without fail, when they are done telling you what they do, people say ‘I want to be a part of that’”.

An Adams Morgan incubator for startups and entrepreneurs earned a $100,000 city-backed investment on Friday when it won a small business competition held by the city and the Washington D.C. Economic Partnership.

"Despite Economy, Some Businesses Succeed" is the title of the segment on Affinity Lab, which aired on February 13th.

Fox says "operating in shared workspace actually has helped (members) success by sparking ideas and referrals." Charles Plank, Affinity Lab's CEO is quoted saying "over the nine years Affinity Lab has been in existence, 82 percent of his clients have remained in business -- a far higher percentage than most start-up businesses."

When Chris Seek decided to launch his own business back in 2002, he knew his studio apartment could double as his office for only so long.

“I had important people coming to town and I was looking for a place where I could make presentations as a real business,” said Seek, president and CEO of Solimar International, a District-based global travel agency and tourism consulting company that focuses on exotic locations and developing nations.

Seek found that place in Affinity Lab, a private business incubator located in the heart of Adams Morgan that provides basic resources for D.C. start-up companies.
